Reflections:

Out of my art, design and media projects this has been the one I have enjoyed the most. I began with Paris is Burning, a starting point that really interested me and made me want to experiment and explore, and finished with an exploration into youth subcultures, my friends, and how millennials are perceived by some. I enjoyed referencing popular culture and borrowing images from unlikely places, such as the 1989 clothing catalogue that began my analogue experiments, and feel that I managed to find a less constrained, free way of compiling my research in my sketchbook without letting obsession over presentation or excessive writing get in the way of my process.

I feel that the outcomes above were an effective conclusion of my journey, and that they are intriguing and interesting pieces in their own right. The Paris is Burning inspired white text against black is striking and clear to read, and against the photographs the anti-Millennial statements are challenged in a tongue-in-cheek way that I think works extremely well. The coloured shapes and illustrative touches tie both text and photographs together, and point the viewer's attention to the focus areas of the photos. These colourful, dynamic features also give the pieces a sense of playful, childish energy that further references the theme of youth in an effective way. The style I used - combining photography, text and manual editing/illustration - is one I really enjoyed. As someone with interests jointly in photography, illustration, and graphics, this combining of techniques is something I would like to experiment with further in future work.
